Make a Bootable USB Thumb drive in Microsoft Vista

In order to setup my new Quad Nic cards I needed to boot to DOS and run a file, however I had no floppy drive. I thought about booting from a cd-rom however when I did the file did not run correctly. This left me only two options: Get a floppy or create a bootable USB thumb drive.
First I noticed that Vista would not allow me to format the USB thumb drive as a bootable device. So off to Google I went for help. Below is what I did to create the bootable USB drive.

Requirements:
A BIOS that support booting USB devices
A USB thumb drive you won’t mind formatting.
HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool – http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,64963-page,1-c,downloads/download.html
Virtual Floppy Drive (VFD) – http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/vfd.html#download”>Link

1.) Download all the files listed above. If the links are not working just Google for the names listed.
2.) Install the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool.
3.) Unzip vfd21-080206.zip.
4.) To start VFD click vfdwin.exe
5.) On the “Driver” tap in VFD click “Install” then “Start”.
6.) Change to the drive 0 tab, and press “Change” button next to Drive Letter. Select a Drive letter you want to use for a virtual floppy. I recommend NOT using drive letters A or B. Click Ok.
7.) Now choose “Open/Create”. You will see the “Open Virtual Floppy Image” windows. Click browse and choose the location where you want the virtual floppy to be (Example: Desktop). Type the name you want the Virtual Floppy file to be called (Example: VFloppy) in the “File Name” field and click “Open”.
8.) Make sure the Disk Type is “RAM” and the Media Type is “3.5 1.44MB” and choose create. A file will be created in the location you specified with the name you entered. A drive will also be created with the drive letter you selected.
9.) Now in Vista right click on the Drive letter you created using VFD and choose format.
10.)  In the format windows choose FAT for the file system and check the “Create an MS-DOS Startup Disk”. Next click Start to begin the format process.
11.)  Make sure you USB key is plugged in and start the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool. Choose you USB drive from the Device drop down and make sure the file system is set to FAT.
12.) Check “Create a DOS startup disk” and use the”…” button to browse the the virtual floppy drive letter you assigned in step 6.
13.)  Click Start to begin the format process. When the format is complete you should have a bootable USB Thumb Drive.
14.) Setup your BIOS to boot to the USB device.

Clean Up.
15.)  Close the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool.
16.) In Virtual Floppy Drive choose the “Driver” tab. Click “Stop” and then “Uninstall”. The drive letter will now disappear however the virtual floppy file will still be there. You can now delete it.
17.) Uninstall HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool if you like.

So there you have it. There are the steps I followed. This worked for me; however use these steps at your own risk.
